Investing in Cheap Cards

I used to hate being on a draw. It seems like every time you’ve got a drawing hand and you stick with it, you invest all these chips but you never get your online poker cards, but whenever you fold a long shot you see the cards come out that would have made your winning hand. I still don’t advocate chasing draw hands, but I’ve found that there’s a neat little strategy for seeing another card or two for a minimal expense-turns out that sometimes you have to spend money to make money.

If you’ve got J-10 and the flop comes A-9-8, you’ve got a pretty solid draw. The big problem you face is the overcard on the board. If you’re in an early position but you want to see the next card or two, bet instead of checking. If you place a bet of two or three times the big blind, you can save yourself from facing a larger bet from a poker opponents. A small bet will discourage your opponents from trying to chase anyone out with a bet for fear of being reraised and you will most likely get to see the next card without having to face a raise. Remember this next time you play online poker.
